January 23, 2002 * Fisheries, Aquaculture and Environment [to Oct 2003]With the heavy accumulation of snow in the last week, the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Environment has issued an advisory to the general public to check the fuel lines connected to outside oil tanks. Last winter, there were 125 cases in which fuel lines snapped under the weight of heavy snow and ice, resulting in costly oil spills. The Department is asking the general public to help prevent weather related spills this winter by keeping oil tanks and fuel lines clear of snow and ice, ensuring there is no danger of damage from falling icicles or chunks of snow and ice, and installing weather protection devices over fuel lines.
