Three new Board members were welcomed at a recent meeting of the East Prince Health Board. Community residents Doreen Gunn and Blanche Maynard were elected and Elmer Williams was appointed by government.
At the recent meeting, the Board also elected Dr. Allen MacLean as Chair of the East Prince Health Board for the upcoming year. Other members of the Board include Barry Murray, Henri Gallant, Carol Peters, Gertrude Trainor and Stuart Affleck.
East Prince Health is governed by a volunteer community Board. This Board is responsible for setting and monitoring the policies which guide our organization. An essential part of this work involves members regularly linking with the people of East Prince so that the direction of health services reflects the priorities of our community.
All five regional health Boards on PEI are composed of a combination of elected and government appointed members. The current East Prince Health Board is composed of five elected members, representing each of five electoral zones within East Prince, and four appointed members. All members serve three-year terms.
Newly appointed member Elmer Williams has lived in Summerside since 1978, when he began working as city postmaster. Retired since 1994, he and his wife Bernice have two children: Margaret and Kenneth. He is a former Summerside town councillor and has served as President of the Greater Summerside Chamber of Commerce, the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, Sail Industries, the PEI Special Olympics and the Abegweit Chapter Heritage Club. He currently in enjoying his role as talk show host for the cable television program "Point of View."
Blanche Maynard was elected to the East Prince Health Board in November 2001. She resides in Tyne Valley with her husband Wendell. Together they have raised four children: Marilyn, Marlene, John, and Warren. Blanche is a retired school teacher and is currently involved in various community associations: President of the Lot 14 UCW, President of the Stewart Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Elder of the Lot 14 United Church.
Doreen Gunn was elected to the East Prince Health Board in November 2001. She and her husband Kenneth are longtime residents of Summerside. They have two daughters: Julia and Kendra. Doreen is a retired school teacher and is involved in many community associations including being a volunteer at the Prince County Hospital, working as Lifeline Program Manager, various golf executive positions, Notre Dame Place volunteer, and Karcher Junior Champ volunteer.
Departing Board Chair Katherine Kelly and member Ron Maynard both served on the Board since its inception in 1994. At a recent regional Annual Meeting, both volunteers were honoured for their dedication and immense contribution to the Board and regional governance activities.
