Island drivers now have another tool to help them safely get through another winter on the roads.
The Department of Transportation and Public Works, in partnership with the Department of Development and Technology, have re-launched the Current Road Conditions page on the PEI government website.
Launched for the first time last year, the Current Road Conditions page lists current road conditions on different sections of roads throughout the province and has a colour-coded interactive map where users can check the road conditions for a particular area. Telephone numbers are also listed on the site to allow drivers to call for updates. Links to current road conditions in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are also available on the page.
"The Current Road Conditions page is another example of how we're using technology to improve road safety services for Islanders," said Transportation and Public Works Minister Don MacKinnon. "However, tools like these can never replace good driving habits. Drivers should also phone ahead for updates as weather conditions can change quickly."
Data is collected by Highway Maintenance Division staff from weather sensors and visual inspections. The information is then regularly updated throughout the day by staff.
A few new features to the page this year are that the data collected is forwarded to the Weather Network for use in their services. Also, a link has been established to the current road conditions page from the CBC Charlottetown website. Drivers can access the current road conditions page at www.gov.pe.ca or at www.charlottetown.cbc.ca.
