Premier Pat Binns offered his sympathies today to the family of Heath Macquarrie. The Premier said people across the province are mourning the former Member of Parliament and Senator's death.
"I was saddened to learn of the passing of Heath Macquarrie. On behalf of all my colleagues in government, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Macquarrie family and to Heath's many, many friends," said Premier Binns.
Heath Nelson Macquarrie was born and resided much of his life in Victoria, Queens County. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1957 as the Member of Parliament for Queen's. He was subsequently re-elected to the Queen's/Hillsborough seat seven times.
"Heath will be remembered for his broad intellectual capacity and commitment to Prince Edward Island. His relationship with the people of Queen's County was sincere and continued until his death," noted the Premier.
Macquarrie was called to the Senate of Canada by Prime Minister Joe Clark on October 3, 1979. He served honourably until his retirement from the Senate in 1994. His parliamentary career spanned five decades.
"He was, without a doubt, the best platform speaker I have ever had the pleasure to observe," said Premier Binns.
A compelling author, teacher, commentator and student of the political process, Macquarrie was an accomplished authority in Middle East affairs.
"Heath's interests reached past Prince Edward Island's and even Canadian borders. I believe his attention to international affairs provided him with a perspective which ultimately contributed to his ability to serve this province," stated Binns.
