Attorney General Jeffrey E. Lantz announced that Executive Council has approved amendments to the Retail Business Holidays Act R.S.P.E.I. 1988, Cap. R-13.02 to allow the Charlottetown Driving Park to hold a card of harness racing and parimutuel betting on Sunday, October 7, 2001.

"The PEI Harness Racing Industry Association approached the province asking that authority be granted to hold a card of parimutuel racing on a Sunday," says Minister Lantz. "The impact of this event on the harness racing industry could help to enhance the profile of harness racing in the community while providing numerous additional benefits."

The Atlantic Breeders Crown will be held at the Charlottetown Driving Park during the weekend of October 5-9, 2001.

"The championship races and auxiliary events will provide a significant positive impact on the harness racing, tourism, entertainment and business sectors within the province," says Minister Lantz.

The amendment sought through the Retail Business Holidays Act, is specifically outlined in the Exemption Regulations of the act. The act and regulations provide the Lieutenant Governor in Council with authority to authorize business on a Sunday or a holiday that is otherwise prohibited under the act. This amendment to allow the Charlottetown Driving Park to hold a card of parimutuel racing is valid on Sunday, October 7, 2001 as a one-day event.
