July 30, 2001 * Tourism [to Jan 2010]"Travel and Leisure," a popular US tour magazine ranked Prince Edward Island as one of the top five "best island destinations" in North America. OUR Island joined other Continential US and Canadian locations including Vancouver Island, Nantucket, Outer Banks and San Juan Islands. The five criteria used to score the destinations included: natural attractions, activities and sights, restaurants and food, people and value. "Prince Edward Island is fast becoming one of the best known Island vacation destinations," declared Minister of Tourism, Greg Deighan. "We are unique because we are an Island, but we only win recognition like this due to our superiority as a vacation destination." The ranking was conducted through a reader survey from which tens of thousands of submissions were tabulated and ranked in the "World's Best Awards 2001" issue.
