Premier Pat Binns today announced the creation of the Lady Slipper Series, a new stakes series for Prince Edward Island owned or foaled Two- and Three-Year Old Pacing Fillies and Two- and Three-Year Old Trotters. Starting in the 2002 racing season, the Charlottetown Driving Park and Summerside Raceway will each host a leg of the new series for each division.
"The goal of the new program is to increase the overall quality of the PEI genetic pool and expand the case of production," stated Mr. Binns. "When breeders nominations, sustaining, track, and starting fees are added to the $100,000 provincial contribution, the stakes series should provide approximately $200,000 in additional purse money for the industry."
Prince Edward Island produces approximately sixty per cent of the standardbred horses raised in the Maritimes. Industry statistics reflect that over 300 Island-bred horses are currently racing at tracks across Canada and the United States.
"Currently there is a significant shortage of horses across North America," added Mr. Binns. "Presented with this opportunity, we feel it is appropriate to strengthen PEI's place as a horse production centre by adding an additional incentive for our producers and owners."
PEI Harness Racing Industry Association President Blaine MacPherson relayed his Association's support of the new program. "We were very appreciative of the opportunity Minister Mitch Murphy provided us to help design the new series." He continued, "We have incorporated industry suggestions regarding the Grassroots component, which we feel will more evenly distribute the available purse money."
Complete stakes conditions are available at both Prince Edward Island racetracks or from the PEI Harness Racing Industry Association office in the Charlottetown Civic Centre by calling 569-1682.
