The 2001 recipients of the Order of Prince Edward Island were announced today by the Chancellor of the Order, the Honourable J. Léonce Bernard, Lieutenant Governor and Mrs. Leone Bagnall, Chair of the Order of Prince Edward Island Advisory Council.
The three Islanders selected to receive the honour are: (The late) Dr. John H. Maloney, Charlottetown; Ms. Maylea Manning, St. Catherines; and Ms. Kay Wall, New Annan.
Information as provided with the nominations for each individual is attached for your reference. These individuals were selected from a total of 35 Islanders nominated to receive the award this year.
The honour was first conferred in 1996 with six individuals invested at that time; since then there have been three Islanders invested each year. The three most recent inductees into the Order in 2000 were: Mr. J. Henri Gaudet, Tignish; Mr. J. Arthur Hudson, Cascumpec; and Ms. Shirley McGinn, Charlottetown.
The honour is awarded as a means of recognizing those Islanders who have shown individual excellence or outstanding leadership in their community and in their chosen occupation or profession. It is the highest honour that can be accorded a citizen of the Province and is awarded annually following a public nomination process. Recipients are selected by an independent nine person Advisory Council.
Insignia of the Order will be presented by His Honour the Lieutenant Governor at a special investiture ceremony at Government House, Charlottetown at a date to be announced.

MS. MAYLEA MANNING OF ST. CATHERINES
Born in Victoria, Prince Edward Island, Ms. Manning has made an exceptional contribution and provided stellar leadership in the fields of agriculture, equestrian sports and music. Through these endeavors, Ms. Manning has contributed significantly to the social, cultural and economic fabric and well being of our Province. Her life has been dedicated to giving a helping hand to others whether it be as an employee with the Provincial Department of Agriculture or through contributions to Island equestrian organizations or horse shows, the PEI Music Festival, the Confederation Centre Boys Choir, the Provincial Exhibition or Old Home Week Horse Show, the Strathgartney Foundation or in her home community, church or assisting a needy neighbour.
For decades Ms. Manning has worked tirelessly and unselfishly to make Prince Edward Island a better place. Some of the organizations and events that have benefitted from Ms. Manning's participation include :

THE LATE DR. JOHN MALONEY OF CHARLOTTETOWN
It is with great regret that we note the passing of Dr. Maloney on 10 May 2001. Pursuant to Subsection 10(4) of the Provincial Emblems and Honours Act, Dr. Maloney will be honoured posthumously.
We as Islanders owe a debt of gratitude to the late Dr. John H. Maloney for his contribution to our Island society. After his education at McGill University in 1942, where he received his medical degree, he became a Member of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Core and served overseas for two years during WWII.
Following the War, he settled in Charlottetown where he and his wife raised five children. Over the next four decades, he contributed greatly in his practice as a doctor in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
In 1970, Dr. Maloney became an MLA and served in the Provincial Government as Cabinet Minister for five different portfolios over the following nine years. During those years in Government his vision was instrumental in establishing the Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation, the Charlottetown Area Development Corporation, the Island's first industrial park in West Royalty, the introduction of Medicare to the Province, bringing the education system to national standards through the building of new schools and Holland College as well as the development of a newly created University of Prince Edward Island. All of these initiatives continue to leave a lasting and significant legacy in our Island community.
In addition, Dr. Maloney contributed through service on numerous boards and associations related to medical and social issues. His personal interest and research in archeology created a collection of artifacts that has substantially contributed to the preservation of the Island's Mik M'ag culture.
Dr. Maloney was also active in cabinet making, golfing, mastering the computer and maintaining a keen interest in social issues.
