Attorney General Jeffrey E. Lantz announced the appointment, by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, of members of the Judicial Remuneration Review Commission.
The appointees are R. Scott Peacock, J. Gordon MacKay, Q.C. and Sylvia Poirier. The appointments were made pursuant to the Provincial Court Act. The Commission's duties are to review judges' salaries and benefits and advise the government as to the appropriateness of existing levels and whether changes are warranted.
This is the second commission. The first commission's report was adopted by the Legislative Assembly on April 7, 1998. It recommended that Provincial Court Judges be paid a salary equivalent to the average paid to judges in other provinces and territories. In 2000 this amounted to $141,696.
Pursuant to the act, the government nominates an individual and the Chief Judge of the Provincial Court nominates a second. The Chairperson is nominated by the other two nominees. R. Scott Peacock, a lawyer, the government's nominee, is a partner in the law firm of Key, McKnight and Peacock. Gordon MacKay was nominated by the Chief Judge of the Provincial Court. He is a partner in the law firm of Carr, Stevenson and MacKay. Sylvia Poirier is Registrar at Holland College.
The Commission will meet and seek submissions from the public in developing its recommendations.
