Fun Activities Continue As Part Of Bike Helmet Safety Month

* Transportation and Public Works [to Jan 2010]
The Department of Transportation and Public Works wishes to advise the public of three upcoming events as part of the community activities surrounding Bike Helmet Safety Month.

Beginning tomorrow, staff from the Department of Transportation and Public Works will be conducting information sessions on proper bike helmet safety techniques at Island kindergartens. The first of these sessions will be held at the Rustico kindergarten with others to follow across the Province. Interested kindergartens can book a session by contacting the Department.

A second exciting activity is a bike rodeo being held this weekend by the PEI Bike Helmet Coalition. The event, sponsored by Canadian Tire, will feature a demonstration by Neil's Ambulance, helpful tips, helmet fittings and giveaways. The Bike Rodeo will take place Saturday morning at the Simmonds arena in Charlottetown.

For further information on the bike rodeo, please contact Constable Gary Clow of the PEI Bike Helmet Coalition at 629-4035.

The third upcoming activity is a contest to test the knowledge of Island school children on bike helmet safety. Students can enter this contest by filling out the Helmet Safety Quiz on the Coool Pedal Gang website. Students names will go into a draw for prizes including bike helmets, water bottles, light kits, and horns. The grand prize will be three mountain bikes which will go to a student from each county. Prizes for the Helmet Safety Quiz are being supplied by Smooth Cycle and will be drawn for throughout the month of June. Students can take the Helmet Safety Quiz by going to the Coool Pedal Gang website at www.cooolpedalgang.com or by accessing a link through the government website at www.gov.pe.ca.

"Activities such as these demonstrate the power of community-based partnerships to increase public awareness and enhance safety," said Transportation and Public Works Minister Don MacKinnon. "I applaud the many community groups and businesses that are showing leadership to help further educate Islanders on the benefits of bike helmet safety. I encourage Islanders to take part in these fun events to help ensure that Islanders young and old enjoy a safe and fun summer on their bikes."
