The Department of Transportation and Public Works today announced the launch of a new public education program as part of the activities surrounding Bike Helmet Safety Month. The "Coool Pedal Gang" program includes a web site (www.cooolpedalgang.com), posters, stickers, wallet cards, certificates and brochures which have been released to Island schools, kindergartens and medical offices to raise the awareness level of proper helmet use for all Islanders.
"The safety of Island youth is very important. Proper use of bike helmets can prevent serious injury and save lives for all Islanders," said Transportation and Public Works Minister Don MacKinnon in announcing the program.
An increasing number of Islanders are using bicycles both recreationally and competitively. With this increased activity comes increased safety risks. Studies indicate that three out of every four children killed in bicycle accidents die from head injuries. Studies have also shown that up to 85 percent of serious head injuries can be prevented through proper use of a CSA approved helmet.
"Adults need to lead by example and always wear their helmets. It's hoped that through this program Islanders young and old will be educated about the benefits of proper helmet use," said MacKinnon.
The "Coool Pedal Gang" project is a cooperative partnership of the Department of Transportation and Public Works and the PEI Bike Helmet Coalition, a community group including membership from the PEI Medical Society, Public Health Nursing, the PEI Council of the Disabled, the PEI Home and School Association, the Charlottetown Police Department, the RCMP, Neil's Ambulance, and numerous sports retailers. Program materials and the website were developed by Media Concepts and Graphic Communications.
