Youth Program Receives National Recognition

* Development and Technology [to Apr 2008]
Four Island schools, Technology PEI and KenNet Inc. are national winners of the Industry Canada - CanConnect Award in the Conference Board of Canada's National Partners in Education Awards. Every year the Board honors excellence in business-education partnerships at all levels of the public education system.

Technology PEI's Between Generations program will be honored in Winnipeg at the Business and Education Awards ceremony, Saturday, April 28 – a highlight of the Partners 2001: Linking Education and the Local Economy Symposium and Showcase, April 26 to April 28, 2001. The program's delivery agent, April Henn from KenNet Inc., (Level II CAP site in Kensington) will represent her community and Technology PEI at the Symposium.

Over 160 business-education partnerships representing 16,000 participating organizations entered this year's competition, with representation from every province and territory.

Distinguished Canadians representing government, education, professional associations and youth make up the judging panel. These judges were specifically looking for partnerships that were clear catalysts for change and that made differences in their respective communities. Between Generations met the panel's key area of focus – showing excellence in fostering information and communications technology skills in youth and their communities.

Between Generations allows youth to capture and illustrate the many stories of past generations through the use of technology. The steps involved in order to complete the project are mutually beneficial; youth are learning about past traditions through interviews and research, while the seniors are exposed to some of today's technology.

"Our department is committed to working with the Island's young people to assure the growth of an IT industry in this province," said Mike Currie, Minister of Development and Technology." This project combines the best of both worlds in PEI: a dedication to our history and the promise of the growth of a new industry. I want to congratulate everyone involved."

Four of the 15 groups participating in the program were formed within their schools. They and their project titles are:
