Government Website Invites Signage Policy Recommendations

On January 10, 2001, the Honourable Greg Deighan, Minister of Tourism, announced the establishment of a Signage Policy Review Committee to review and make recommendations on the future direction of the provincial highway advertisement legislation and the Highway Information Signage Program.

At the time, Minister Deighan noted that it has been over 25 years since the current policies and programs for commercial signage were put in place and a great deal has changed since these policies were first established. It was determined that, due to substantial development on the Island, it is now timely that a review of signage policies be undertaken.

"A committee comprised of representatives from government, the private sector, the tourism industry and Island municipalities has been established to review the Province's signage policy and to make recommendations on future direction," noted the Minister. "As part of its review, the industry-government committee is seeking input from the public. If you are a resident of the Province or if you have visited Prince Edward Island, we are interested in hearing from you."

The deadline for submissions, March 5, 2001, is fast approaching and Government is encouraging those who are interested to send in a written submission or use the internet to provide suggestions. The government website, www.gov.pe.ca, features a sidebar with the header "Highway Signage," which will lead the user to a page which provides a form to submit recommendations toward the signage policy.

If you have any comments on the current signage program or how you think signage should be regulated in the future, visit: http://www.gov.pe.ca/go/signage.

"The Committee has been mandated to obtain public input and to review all aspects of commercial signage policy," said Mr. Deighan. "When the current policy was established in the early 1970's, it was very innovative and has served the Province well in terms of protecting the Island's landscape. In shaping future policy, I believe that it is important that we not lose sight of this primary objective."
