February 8, 2001 * Fisheries, Aquaculture and Environment [to Oct 2003]The Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Environment is advising the general public that, since January 7, there have been 20 reported domestic oil spills directly related to the winter weather conditions and snow accumulation.Of these 20 spills, at least six are considered serious, with three possible cases of groundwater contamination. The general public is being asked to immediately remove any build-up of snow from around their oil tanks, taking care not to damage the fuel lines while doing so. This is especially important now as rain is forecast for Saturday and the wet snow will add additional weight on the fuel lines.Media Contact: Island Information Service
