Premier Pat Binns says he has decided not to take part in the planned Team Canada Trade Mission to South Korea, the Phillippines and Thailand scheduled for January 8-20, 1997.
Premier Binns says while he recognizes and supports the value of such trade missions, other demands will take his attention. "I very much appreciate the generous invitation of the Prime Minister to take part in the Trade Mission, but given the timing and the matters to be dealt with by the Provincial government, I do not feel I can make the commitment to attend, especially this early in the term of a new government. But, I am pleased the Island will be represented."
The timing of the mission would require the Premier to be out-of-province for over two weeks. The countries involved in the mission are not considered major opportunities for new trade.
The Premier says "the election and transition delayed the budget process, and given the deficit situation faced by the province, the budget will require considerable work. There are other policy matters we want to move on during the Spring session of the Legislature which require considerable discussion and planning."
Premier Binns is pleased Prince Edward Island will be represented on the trade mission. "The greatest opportunities for trade development in the countries included in
the trade mission will be explored by the Islanders taking part, representing both the public and private sector. I certainly support their efforts and their initiative in this mission."
Premier Binns says the Province is interested in exploring trade opportunities with all areas of the world, and he looks forward to being involved in future missions. "I want to take this opportunity to wish the Prime Minister and my provincial colleagues success on the trade mission. The expansion of trade opportunities benefits all Canadians."
