The Premier's Crime Prevention Awards were presented today at the Lieutenant Governor's Residence. The Premier's Crime Prevention Awards recognize individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to community safety through crime prevention.
"It is important that we stop to recognize those who dedicate their lives to creating a better quality of life for everyone," says Premier Binns. "I sincerely hope that this event will also inspire others to get involved."
Three organizations were recognized for working to improve opportunities for young people in our communities: Big Brothers-Big Sisters of PEI, The Home and School Federation, and The Summerside Boys and Girls Club.
Eliot River School was also honoured for creating a peaceful environment in schools and workplaces.
For the first time, an organization that serves Aboriginal people was also recognized. The Native Council of PEI has shown a commitment to partnerships and an ability to work hard for little recognition or reward beyond the satisfaction of making a contribution to the Aboriginal Community of Prince Edward Island.
Don McKinnon from Birchwood School has demonstrated how the efforts of just one individual can make a major impact -- on individual youth and their families and inspiring others to follow his example.
"Those honoured today have inspired others. We never know when something we say or do is going to have an impact on someone -- perhaps our words will encourage a young person, make someone feel like they belong, and set an example others can follow," says Premier Binns. "These recipients have demonstrated, by their efforts, their commitment to making the Island a safer and friendlier place for all who live here and all who visit here."
2000 marks the 14th year of the Premier's Crime Prevention Awards. The ceremony gives the government of Prince Edward Island an opportunity to show appreciation to individuals and organizations who have made a significant contribution to preventing crime in island communities.
