Premier Pat Binns today announced a major reshuffling at the senior administrative level of government. The changes involve five of the eight departments of government as well as the Executive Council Office and Legislative Assembly.
Premier Binns says "the number of Deputies has been decreased to reflect the realignment of departments, some new people have been added and others reaffirmed. The emphasis is on a cohesive team that will advance the priorities of Islanders."
The Premier says the changes reflect the priorities of government: job creation, education, health care and communities. "I am pleased with the commitment of those already serving as Deputies as well as those appointed today to work with us in meeting the expressed needs of Islanders."
He says the changes announced today are part of the transition process. "This puts the senior management team of government in place, and that team will look at other changes to the administrative structure. The immediate goal is to move forward with preparing the budget and legislative package for the Spring session of the Legislative Assembly."
Premier Binns says other changes may be made in the months ahead as the government moves forward with the implementation of its mandate. "Some of the changes we plan, such as the Health and Community Services Agency, involve legislative action and that will come at a later date."
"I want to thank all those who assisted in this process, and those who have served government at the senior level. It is a demanding role and the enthusiasm with which they have accepted the task is appreciated."
