Get Ready To Celebrate The Trail Completion

* Tourism [to Jan 2010]
The Last Spike Bike Tour is coming up August 7-12, 2000, marking the official launch of the completion of the Confederation Trail on Prince Edward Island. The smallest province in Canada now has the honourable distinction of being the first province to complete their portion of the Trans Canada Trail -- the world's longest trail.

The Last Spike Bike Tour will incorporate some wonderful entertainment along the "tip-to-tip" journey, taking in events in various communities across the Island. Events like blueberries and music in St. Peters featuring Boys in the Kitchen; mussels, oysters and music on the beach in Tracadie Cross with Michael Pendergast; celebrating Ireland in Emerald with Celtic Tide; a typical Acadian Soiree in Abram's Village; seafood, marshmallows and entertainment around the campfire in Mill River; and the grand finale in Summerside with the Last Spike Ceremony," featuring entertainment provided by the College of Piping.

People are encouraged to take in what feels comfortable to them. A day here and there, a 6-day tour, or even just pop along the trail and catch up with the group when they are in your community. Those who have decided to opt in to the "packages" offered by Outside Expeditions will enjoy services like fruit and snacks along the trail, knowledgeable and friendly guides, gourmet and traditional meals featuring Island tastes, equipment, bottled water, accommodations or camping, etc.

Curt Harnett, three time Olympic medalist, will be accompanying the expedition -- but the event is not competitive -- Curt is there to explore the trail just like everyone else -- enjoying a pace that is suitable for all. That said, he would likely entertain the odd sprint, if encouraged.

The event allows everyone a chance to bike through beautiful landscapes by day and enjoy a different Island community festival each evening. Plan to attend and join Curt Harnett as one of the first to bike from tip to tip on Prince Edward Island on the Trans Canada Trail.

There are still openings available and, if you are interested in the various options, the number to call is 1-800-207-3899. It's a great way to get out and see some of the most beautiful parts of Prince Edward Island while participating in a history --making, cross-Island tour -- Don't miss out on this great opportunity!
