The $1.2 million high quality tourist accommodation, The Inn At Spry Point, officially opened today, celebrating a successful first month of operations. Since opening to guests on June 29, there has been a high demand in bookings for the suites and modern bistro-style restaurant.
"Eastern Prince Edward Island has many treasures and The Inn at Spry Point is yet another reason for visitors and Islanders to explore this area of the province," said the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Solicitor General of Canada representing the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).
David Wilmer, owner and operator of The Inn At Spry Point, was the successful bidder in 1999 to the Government of Prince Edward Island's request for proposals to develop the Spry Point property. For more than a decade, Wilmer has operated a sister property, The Inn At Bay Fortune, a 10-minute car ride from Spry Point.
"David Wilmer has proven himself to be an able and accomplished tourist operator," said the Honourable Michael F. Currie, Minister of Development and Technology. "The Inn at Bay Fortune has earned him - and this whole province - a reputation for providing a high quality tourism product. This venture is sure to extend that reputation."
The Inn At Spry Point is a striking rendition of traditional clapboard-style architecture with its hip roofs, gables and cupolas. It features 15 guest suites, all with king-sized beds, sitting areas and private full baths - 11 have private balconies and four have garden terraces. The Inn has a multi-function meeting space and the dining room overlooks the waters.
"We structured the Inn in such a way to take advantage of the spectacular rural setting of Spry Point," said Wilmer. "The location is ideal for enjoying the nearby secluded white sandy beach, private nature trails, breathtaking water views and stunning sunsets. The seclusion of the property will provide guests with the solitude that they seek, as well as timeless memories of their Prince Edward Island seaside getaway."
"I am very pleased that so far this year we have been experiencing increased numbers in dining and accommodation over last year," Wilmer added.
Approximately 25 people are employed this season at the Inn at Spry Point. As the Inn's reputation grows, so will the need for additional staff.
The Head Chef of The Inn At Spry Point is Shirleen Peardon, a graduate of The Culinary Institute in Charlottetown. Peardon has worked in PEI and Zurich, Switzerland. The dining room menu changes daily to reflect the freshest of Island ingredients. Reservations for the dining room are recommended.
The Inn At Spry Point will be open until September 30, 2000. Rooms range in price between $145 to $185 per night, including a full breakfast daily. Golf and dining packages are available.
The Inn At Spry Point received a $400,000 repayable loan under ACOA's Business Development Program. The Province of Prince Edward Island sold Mr. Wilmer the property for the development.
