Seniors can now access a new PEI Seniors Web Site for information on PEI health and community services and topics of interest to seniors.
The site was launched today by the Department of Health and Social Services and the Prince Edward Island Seniors Advisory Council.
Health and Social Services Minister Jamie Ballem advised that the PEI Seniors Web Site contains a wide range of information on health services such as physician services, home care and mental health services. It points to information on services in Island communities such as churches, support groups and Meals On Wheels. It also links seniors to other sites of interest such as gardening, weather and news sites.
"More and more Island seniors are using the Internet," advised Minister Ballem, "The new site is designed to make information on PEI government and community services easy for seniors to access. It also meets a pressing need in our health system to make current information on seniors services easily accessible for seniors and families."
The site was developed by the PEI Seniors Advisory Council in response to repeated requests by seniors to be able to access timely and coordinated information on services for seniors.
Heather Henry-MacDonald, Council Chair, advised that the new site makes information on services and supports for seniors available through one easily accessible site. "There is a wealth of information on the Internet about government and community services, as well as news and lifestyle activities. The new site will make all this information easy for seniors to find and use," said Ms. Henry-MacDonald.
Dr. Bernice Bell of the PEI Gerontology Association said the creation of the site will benefit community organizations by assisting them to make information available to the public. "Through the new seniors web site, people can find information about our own association, as well as other gerontology sites across the country which make information available on healthy aging," said Dr. Bell.
The new PEI Seniors Web Site can be accessed through the provincial government web site at www.gov.pe.ca/seniors. For more information about the web site, call Pat Malone, Seniors Services Liaison at 368 6190.
