Forty people active in improving habitat conditions for wildlife in Prince Edward Island are participating in a workshop at the MacPhail Homestead in Orwell Cove this week (June 12-16).
This marks the third year the Wildlife Habitat Improvement Workshop has been offered. Kevin J. MacAdam, Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Environment, said it has proven to be a very worthwhile undertaking.
"The whole province reaps the benefit," Minister MacAdam said in a news release. "The workshop provides valuable information to the participants on habitat improvement techniques which they are able to take back and apply in projects they are carrying out in their communities across Prince Edward Island."
The workshop is coordinated by the Canadian Aquaculture Institute and is supported by the Provincial Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Environment and Human Resources Development Canada.
The format consists of morning presentations by specialists from various federal and provincial government departments as well as non-governmental organizations. Afternoon field trips then give participants the opportunity to see the habitat improvement techniques which they have learned about put into practice at specific projects.
One day is devoted to each of the following five broad topic areas affecting wildlife habitat improvement: forest management; agricultural land management; stream enhancement; wetland management; and project administration.
In addition to arming participants with invaluable information, the workshops provide an excellent opportunity for people involved in wildlife habitat improvement to meet the provincial department officials they deal with in carrying out their projects, and other experts they can call on for advice and assistance.
