Plaque Dedicated To Children Of The Protestant Children's Orphanage

* Health and Social Services [to Nov 2005]
Health and Social Services Minister Mildred Dover unveiled a plaque today at the new Provincial Addictions Centre dedicated to the children of the Protestant Children's Orphanage which was situated on the site for many years.

Minister Dover advised that the monument and plaque were placed in response to many requests to commemorate the rich history of the site. "For the many people who pass through these doors seeking help in future, this will be a reminder of the wonderful work that has gone on here for many years before," said the minister.

The orphanage, later called the PEI Protestant Children's Home, was situated on the site from 1907 to 1975. It was originally established by The Grand Orange Lodge of PEI and later placed in the hands of Trustees. Over the years, the orphanage operated a farm and a school. It employed many people and was home to as many as 45 children at a time. It was closed in 1975 and children have since been placed in foster homes.

In 1978, the name of The PEI Protestant Children's Home was changed to PEI Protestant Children's Trust. The Trust remains very active issuing about 70 bursaries per year to needy students.
