The doors to the new $5.5 million elementary school which will serve the communities of Winsloe and West Royalty were officially opened today by students, staff, parents, Eastern School District representatives and government officials.
"This new school is a state-of-the art learning and teaching environment for students and teachers," said Premier Pat Binns. "The Government of Prince Edward Island is committed to supporting a strong public education system and vibrant communities. Our $43 million Capital Construction Plan for schools is a multi-year strategy that will enhance the infrastructure of 10 Island schools, and provide for the on-going capital maintenance of all schools in PEI."
The school, which is approximately 50,000 square feet, is designed for 450 students and will accommodate students from West Royalty Elementary School as well as students from Winsloe, Orchard Hill and Lewis Point.
"These new classrooms, a resource centre and special education room are just a few components of this remarkable facility," said Education Minister Chester Gillan. "Schools are much more than mortar and bricks, however, and this community has pulled together to build a strong school spirit — a spirit that will only grow stronger in September when the full complement of students is attending the school."
Barb Foster, principal of the school, echoed the Minister Gillan's comments. "We have a wonderful facility in which to create a vibrant, active learning community," said Ms. Foster. "It's very exciting for all concerned."
Among the new school's features are 18 classrooms, a gymnasium, a softball diamond and soccer field. The entire facility is barrier free.
Development Minister Don MacKinnon, MLA for Winsloe-West Royalty, said the dedication of area residents helped pave the way for the new facility.
"This new school ends years of uncertainty for West Royalty residents regarding the future of our school," said Minister MacKinnon. "It is a most welcome addition in our rapidly growing community. I know that residents will be very pleased to have access to new school facilities and sport facilities after school hours."
The architect for the construction project was Bergmark, Guimond, Hammarlund and Jones Architects. The general contractor was Schurman Construction.
