Two exciting new programs are available to companies in PEI to assist them in using the Internet as a way to promote business and to export products and services.
The Web Presence Program is designed to encourage Island entrepreneurs to develop web pages. The e-commerce for Export Program aims to assist businesses in PEI with an interest in e-commerce to develop their web sites for the purpose of exporting.
Currently, there are 1,200 Island businesses with a presence on the web.
"We need to increase the number of Island-based companies using web services, and provide non-IT companies with incentives to introduce technology to increase their business," said the Honourable Mitch Murphy, Minister of Technology. "These programs are aimed at increasing the number of business domains registered in PEI and to support Island companies using e-commerce."
The programs are being delivered by Prince Edward Island Business Development (PEIBD), the lead business development corporation for the province.
"With more business occurring over the Internet worldwide, Island businesses need to get connected to stay competitive in this growing market," said the Honourable Don MacKinnon, Minister of Development. "The province's exports have nearly doubled in the past five years. To continue this growing trend, more Islanders need to start adopting e-business methods for selling Island products and services."
The Web Presence and e-commerce for Export programs combined will provide assistance of over a half a million dollars to Island businesses. The two programs are available now until the end of September. Island businesses are encouraged to contact a PEIBD office in their area to fill out an application or to find out more about the programs.
Prince Edward Island Business Development and the Department of Technology and Environment have joined forces to develop and deliver the Web Presence and e-commerce for Export Programs. The Department of Technology and Environment aims to build upon the technological infrastructure already in place on PEI in order to maximize opportunities for the Island's IT industry. PEIBD works to assist Island companies in conducting successful business both on and off the Island.
