At the tip of a 110-acre peninsula on the Spry Point Road, a $1.2 million high quality tourist accommodation, The Inn at Spry Point, is under construction and will be open for the upcoming tourist season. The inn will feature 15 guest rooms, a dining room and multi-function meeting space. It is being built to a minimum three-and-a-half star Canada Select grading standard. The inn will operate from June to September annually.
David Wilmer, the owner/operator of The Inn At Spry Point, is familiar with the hard work that is required to be successful in the tourism industry. For more than a decade, Wilmer has operated a sister property, The Inn At Bay Fortune, a ten-minute car ride from Spry Point. Wilmer was the successful bidder to the Government of Prince Edward Island's request for proposals to develop the Spry Point property.
"Our goal with The Inn At Spry Point is to build on our strengths," said Wilmer. "The location and setting with water on three sides, nature trails throughout the property and a beautiful sandy beach will provide our guests with an accommodations and dining experience that is unequalled on Prince Edward Island. The synergies we can offer with The Inn At Bay Fortune and Sally's Beach will jump start this business and make for an exciting start to this millennium."
The new Inn will add more top quality accommodations to the eastern part of the Island. The Inn At Bay Fortune already enjoys a reputation for high quality and service and draws visitors from all over the world.
The Province is undertaking another project in the Spry Point area. The Department of Transportation and Public Works is developing a dayuse park at Sally's Beach, the waterfront property adjacent to The Inn At Spry Point. The park will include a building featuring a multi-purpose room, washrooms, changing facilities, an outdoor deck and a boardwalk leading to Sally's Beach. Ample parking will also be provided for the upcoming season.
"The Province is pleased to see this beautiful property become a major contributor to tourism in King's County," said the Honourable Pat Binns, Premier of Prince Edward Island. "This project is an excellent example of government allowing private sector to assume the lead role in developing quality tourism products on the Island. We look forward to working with Mr. Wilmer, and other private sector developers, who bring to the table phenomenal expertise and insight in developing world class accommodations."
David Wilmer will employ approximately 25 people this season at the Inn at Spry Point. As the Inn's reputation grows, so will the need for additional staff.
"The Inn At Spry Point and Sally's Beach Dayuse Park will complement each other, providing a significant draw to the Spry Point area," said the Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Transportation and Public Works. "The park at Sally's Beach will give Islanders in particular new beach access through a well managed, well maintained facility."
Both the dayuse park and the Inn will open this summer.
