Tourism PEI today announced the addition of Island Tel and its parent company, Aliant, as a major sponsor for the upcoming Lorie Kane Island Challenge. The group joins Royal Bank, Rodd Hotels & Resorts, and Moosehead Breweries as major sponsors for the event which will be held at the Brudenell River Golf Resort, August 29 and 30, which will be televised by The Sports Network (TSN).
"We are very pleased that Island Tel and Aliant have chosen to endorse the women's skins event," noted Kevin J. MacAdam, Minister of Fisheries and Tourism. "The enthusiasm that this group and the three previous contributors have shown is indicative of the excitement that will surround the entire event."
Philip Acorn, Island Tel's president and COO, said his company is proud to continue its tradition of sponsoring events that generate positive economic benefits for the province. "We are very pleased to be supporting this initiative of Tourism PEI," he said. "Besides being a great sporting event, the Lorie Kane Island Challenge will showcase PEI to a wide audience and enhance the Island's reputation as a prime golfing and tourism destination."
Lorie was on hand personally to invite her peers, Nancy Lopez, Se Ri Pak, and Annika Sörenstam to "come play on HER island" at a news conference held January 26 in Charlottetown. The foursome have a long history of professional and personal association and the competition on the green will make for some excellent golf.
"Aliant's involvement in this event reflects our desire to support activities that bring benefits to our home markets," said Stephen Wetmore, president and CEO of Aliant Inc. "As a company focussed on national and international expansion, this world-class event helps to enhance our position as a global high-tech player based here in Atlantic Canada."
Tourism PEI is organizing the event and the addition of Island Tel and Aliant to the fold is just what they were looking for. "It's great to have some hometown support in the way of sponsorships," noted Minister MacAdam. "We look forward to working with those that have joined us so far, and welcome further sponsorship from the corporate sector."
