February 15, 2000 Lieutenant Governor Gilbert R. Clements expressed his sympathy today on the passing of the Honourable J. Angus MacLean. A distinguished Islander and Canadian, Mr. MacLean was 25 years old when he joined the RCAF and heroic duties earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross by King George V1. A political career followed and he served in both the federal and provincial Cabinets before becoming Premier of Prince Edward Island. Mr. MacLean was a true statesman who served his people well. His love of the land was always evident. He was a leader in the blueberry industry and his success in the annual blueberry crop that he enjoyed harvesting has paved the way for the growth of this industry across the Province. The Island was always very special to him and his commitment in particular to the rural areas was obvious. Prince Edward Islanders have lost an outstanding citizen. "I had the honour of serving in the Provincial Legislature under his Premiership and today I have lost a colleague and friend. On behalf of Wilma and myself I extend our sympathy to his wife Gwen and their four children." For more information contact Judy Burke, Private Secretary at 902-368-5480.
