A proposed association for the Prince Edward Island harness racing industry will be the topic of an open meeting this Friday, January 7 at the Farm Centre in Charlottetown at 8:00 p.m.
Jane Holmes, the Executive Director of the Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association (OHRIA) will be the guest speaker for the evening. "Since its formation three years ago, OHRIA has worked with the provincial government on such issues as taxation, parimutuel takeout, and other gaming issues," said Pat McHugh, Chair of the PEI industry planning group. "We felt Jane would be an ideal person to assist our industry in establishing a similar organization on a provincial and regional basis."
A planning group comprised of representatives from the Charlottetown Driving Park, Summerside Raceway, the Standardbred Horseowners Association, the Colt Stakes Association, the Department of Agriculture and Forestry and the breeding sector have been holding planning meetings over the last five months discussing a provincial organization. Similar groups have been established in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, who will also be meeting with Ms. Holmes this weekend.
