Provincial Government of Prince Edward Island Experiences Smooth Transition Into Year 2000

All provincial government facilities, information systems and equipment checked to-date by departments, agencies, the provincial health care system and schools are running as usual in Prince Edward Island.

"So far so good," reports Minister Mitch Murphy, PEI Department of Technology and Environment. "The Y2K transition has unfolded without incident as expected, due to the preparations undertaken by provincial public service staff since 1996."

According to the Provincial Government Transition Management Team, the Provincial Emergency Measures Organization has not reported any emergency situations in the province.

"We also want to thank our key service providers for their efforts," added Minister Murphy.

Island Tel reports that its networks and systems made a smooth and uneventful transition into the new millennium. All elements operated normally throughout the rollover period. Island Tel will now resume its regular, round-the-clock monitoring schedule.

Maritime Electric also reports that they experienced no problems.

The Provincial Government Transition Management Team will continue to work cooperatively with federal, provincial and territorial counterparts as well as the Provincial Emergency Measures Organization to continue to monitor international, national and local situations and to share information to minimize the potential impact of Y2K on Islanders.

"I encourage Islanders to continue to enjoy their new year's celebrations," adds Minister Murphy, "and to be assured that provincial government staff will continue to monitor systems and infrastructure."
