Information about Prince Edward Island's court systems, as well as PEI's Supreme Court judgments, are now on the Internet and available to the public at www.supreme.court.pe.ca. This project is a joint initiative of the Supreme Court, Department of Community Services and Attorney General and the Department of Development.
Minister Wes MacAleer, Minister of Community Services and Attorney General, said, "The Supreme Court has been working for some time on this worthwhile initiative. Members of the public are now able to access the written decisions of the Supreme Court's Trial and Appeal Divisions. Decisions are available for cases heard from January 1997 until the present. As new judgments are rendered, the decisions will be put on line shortly after their release to the public."
Chief Justice Norman H. Carruthers of the Supreme Court said, "With respect to some of the cases, only the name of the case and a brief description are available. These are: (1) cases in which a publication ban has been imposed under the Criminal Code or other legislation; (2) cases involving actions, applications or petitions under the Family and Child Services Act, The Family Law Act and The Divorce Act. For the balance of the cases, however, the full text is available on-line. We are pleased to provide the public with more information about the work of the court system."
Don MacKinnon, Minister of Development noted, "The Department of Development is delighted to have worked on this project to put the decisions on-line. This is indicative of our desire to provide the public with one comprehensive place for ready access to information about PEI. By putting the information on-line, Islanders from Tignish to Souris will be able to easily access information about the work of their courts."
