Breakfast for Learning Week, September 26 to October 2, 1999, promotes children eating breakfast so they have the important nutrients and calories to problem solve and concentrate better.
Breakfast for Learning Week will increase awareness among Islanders about the importance of child nutrition as it relates to learning says Minister of Education Chester Gillan. "Proper nutrition greatly enhances a child's ability to learn," said Minister Gillan.
There are several school breakfast programs in place across the Island, and more programs are being developed by schools in partnership with community organizations. For example, Eastern Kings Health is working with Souris Consolidated School to develop a breakfast program for their school.
In Prince Edward Island, local IODE chapters have established 22 Food for Thought programs. Children who come to school hungry for any reason are given things such as crackers or fruit from the IODE's Food for Thought box. Teachers distribute snacks discreetly from the box and schools contact the IODE when the supplies are low.
"These partnership projects are excellent examples of how Island communities are working together to ensure our children are well nourished and ready to learn, " said Minister of Health and Social Services Mildred Dover. "When parents and communities emphasize the importance of eating breakfast, children learn proper eating habits important for healthy development."
