Kings County Maintenance Garage Opened

The Honourable Pat Binns, Premier and the Honourable Mike Currie, Minister of Transportation and Public Works, today cut the ribbon to officially open the Kings County Maintenance Garage in Bridgetown.

The opening of the 10,000 square foot Kings County site gives the Department of Transportation and Public Works a maintenance facility in all three counties. Prior to today, all Kings County machinery in need of service was trucked to Charlottetown for repair, or mechanics were dispatched to make repairs and upgrades.

Premier Binns said the opening is good news for all of Kings County and reflects the Government's commitment to building stronger communities.

"This announcement not only makes the Central Kings area stronger, but it strengthens the entire county, because every part needed for repair will be purchased locally, meaning the economic spin-offs will be felt throughout all of Kings County," the Premier said.

Minister Currie, also MLA for Georgetown-Baldwin's Road, said the garage is staffed with qualified people who will continue to provide the level of service that the Charlottetown Garage has in the past.

"There are 20 full-time jobs, and another 20 seasonal jobs will be in place at peak times during the winter," said Minister Currie. "I have every confidence that the level of service for the Kings County fleet will not only be maintained but enhanced because of today's opening."

M.F. Schurman Co. Ltd served as General Contractor for the project, and over a dozen sub-contractors assisted in a number of areas. Minister Currie said over 75 people were employed during construction of the garage.
