Beach Grove Home marked its 30th anniversary this week with a celebration for residents and an investment in long-term-care beds from government.
The province is investing more than $1 million to purchase 180 new long-term care beds to replace those at Beach Grove Home and Wedgewood Manor and to integrate more specialized bariatric beds into facilities across the province.
“In the 30 years that Beach Grove Home has been a pillar of our long-term care system, we have seen how new technology and equipment can improve a patient’s health outcome and quality of life,” Health and Wellness Minister Robert Henderson said. “This investment will allow us to deliver residents the right care, in the right place, and better meet their needs and those of the staff who support them.”
Of the 180 new beds, 130 will replace existing beds at Beach Grove Home and 40 will replace beds at Wedgewood Manor in Summerside. The remaining 10 will be new bariatric beds that will be distributed to Health PEI run long-term care facilities across the province.
The addition of new bariatric beds allows Health PEI to expand this specialized service to its long-term care facilities across the province, eliminating the need for these patients to experience extended stays in hospital while waiting for a specialized long-term care bed.
“Today marks an important milestone for Beach Grove Home, our residents and staff, as well as for our long-term care system as a whole,” said acting Director of Long-Term Care Andrew MacDougall. “Our long-term care facilities are here to support Islanders. These new beds will help us ensure that we can provide those who can no longer safely stay in their homes with the comfort and care they deserve.”
New technology, such as being able to adjust the bed at the touch of a button, will also make it easier and safer for staff helping residents get in and out of bed.
