Prince Edward Island will temporarily become the world hub of health promotion expertise during the coming weekend.
More than 250 international delegates will gather October 16 and 17 for the sixth annual Global Forum on Health Promotion. This weekend marks the first time the event has been held outside of Geneva, Switzerland.
“Prince Edward Island is proud to have this rare opportunity to welcome health policymakers, researchers, educators, and other leaders and experts from around the globe,” Premier Wade MacLauchlan said. “This forum will allow delegates to connect with international health promotion leaders and share how communities and organizations are creating change locally, nationally and globally.”
The Global Forum on Health Promotion is being hosted by and co-organized by the Government of Prince Edward Island in partnership with the Alliance for Health Promotion, The Quaich Inc., and Groupe entreprises en santé.
“Health promotion generally means promoting the health of everyone – regardless of where they live – by building healthy public policy and community action that helps improve the conditions that make them unhealthy,” Minister of Health and Wellness Robert Henderson said. “We need collaboration to move this agenda forward, which is why the Global Forum and the PEI Learning Event are so exciting – they are about individuals coming together to share ideas, celebrate success, discuss issues, and unite behind a common goal of improving health promotion.”
In addition to the Global Forum, Prince Edward Island’s Chief Public Health Office will host a PEI Health Promotion Learning Event, with the theme “Your Work Matters in the Global Village” on Tuesday October 18.
The provincial Wellness Strategy is guiding government’s health promotion direction through its focus on healthy eating, physical activity, responsible alcohol use, mental wellness, and tobacco use.
