Prince Edward Island is celebrating its fast-growing organic farming industry during National Organic Week.
“In concurrence with Canada’s National Organic Week I want to recognize all organic farmers across Prince Edward Island,” Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Alan McIsaac said. “P.E.I.’s organic industry continues to grow with more than 60 certified producers now in the province providing environmentally friendly, high-quality products that help make us Canada’s Food Island.”
The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries supports the Island’s organic industry through programs such as Growing Forward 2 and the Organic Industry Development Program. The fast-growing organic sector on Prince Edward Island is valued at about $10 million.
Organic Week 2016 is a nationwide event that provides consumers with the opportunity to celebrate organic farmers and processors who to produce wholesome, healthy food.
The PEI Certified Organic Producers Co-op (COPC) represents organic farmers and like minded consumers and shares government’s vision of a vibrant, growing organic industry in Prince Edward Island. The COPC will host their 13th annual Organic Harvest Meal this Sunday, September 25 at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in celebration of Organic Week. Minister McIsaac will be a guest speaker.
“It is gratifying to know that the work we do as organic farmers is valuable to our community,” said PEI COPC President Amy Smith. “As the industry continues to grow, we are seen as important partners in the food system here on P.E.I. and across the country."
