Small Print Board Game Café owner Julian Taylor is a great example of how the entrepreneurial spirit of Islanders is creating economic growth and enriching our communities, says Minister Richard Brown, Workforce and Advanced Learning.
“It is exciting to assist clients like Julian who are taking a popular trend and turning it into a unique business here in Prince Edward Island,” said Minister Brown. “Julian created and implemented his business plan to carry out his passion and to also share it with others. Entrepreneurs like Julian will help build sustained prosperity for our province.”
Taylor pursued his board game passion with his partner Jennifer Campbell earlier this spring when the two self-proclaimed board game enthusiasts saw a niche market in Charlottetown.
“Thanks to the Self Employ PEI Program, we were able to turn our business plan into a reality,” said Taylor. “It is helpful to have the support and encouragement of Government; we couldn’t have done this alone.”
Small Print Board Game Café, a retro-type board game café, offers its patrons an alternative option for entertainment: access to a game library of over 300 games, assistance with the small print game instructions (reflected in the café’s name), and café style eats and drinks. Testimonials on the café claim it’s “every bit as cool as board game cafés located in more metropolitan areas.”
The Self Employ PEI Program assists clients like Taylor through the Canada-PEI Labour Market Development Agreement. Under the program, applicants are eligible for support during their first year of operation. The program also offers up to $1,000 for a business planning consultant to assist with financing or marketing plans.
