Provincial government donates land for expanded Georgetown Municipal Services

The Government of Prince Edward Island will donate a parcel of provincially-owned land to the Town of Georgetown allowing the community needed space to expand services, says Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar.

“This week government agreed to give Georgetown a parcel of land on Grafton Street adjacent to the community’s fire department and civic centre,” said the minister.

“This $1 transfer will give the town needed space to expand its services and improve its ability to deliver ongoing maintenance.”

Georgetown Mayor Lewis Lavandier said the newly donated land would allow town council needed space for its public works operations. The town plans to use the land to build a new maintenance building for its Public Works department.

“This key parcel of land will allow us to build a new public works maintenance building in the center of our Town, on Grafton Street adjacent to our Civic Center,” said Mayor Lavandier. “Georgetown appreciates that the Province has been able to address our need in a timely manner, we look forward to continuing to work with the Province on future projects.”

The lot was acquired by the government in 2010 after a lack of acceptable bids when the property was sold for non-payment of taxes.
