We are committed to providing Islanders with safe end-of-life care with the utmost compassion and dignity.
Individuals seeking medical assistance in dying are legally able to do so in Canada.
The Supreme Court provided a deadline of June 6, 2016 for the federal parliament to adopt legislation to regulate the practice of medical assistance in dying. In response, the federal government introduced Bill C-14, which is now before Parliament and being debated in the Senate.
We encourage both the Senate and the House of Commons to continue their collaborative work to pass legislation that will allow for the establishment of a national framework for the provision of medical assistance in dying. This will ensure a clear and consistent approach to the delivery of the service across the country.
Health PEI has developed a draft policy and procedures for medical assistance in dying that will be implemented once the federal legislation has been passed. Until that time it will defer to the standards and processes developed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island, and requests will be addressed on a case by case basis.
Prince Edward Island justice and health officials are working closely to monitor the national discussions on this matter, and are prepared to respond to any change in direction set by the federal government.
People who wish to access this service should speak with their health care provider to discuss options available. Health care professionals are advised to contact the College of Physician and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island to ensure they are aware of the standards and process that have been developed by the College.
