Public meeting to review progress and plans for Bonshaw Park

Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy
An upcoming public meeting will allow community members to review the ongoing development of Bonshaw park and the nearby trail system, says Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar.

“In recent years we have been able to expand on the Bonshaw and Strathgartney parks and to link them into a large trail network. This work is allowing more Islanders and visitors to enjoy this beautiful section of Queens County,” said Minister Biggar. “The Bonshaw Hills Public Land Committee has shown great leadership in helping this area to reach its potential as a recreational and natural area. This meeting will allow residents of the Bonshaw area to look at how the park has developed and to see plans for upcoming developments to this park.”

“Through the work of the Bonshaw Hills Public Land Committee, more than 400 acres of land is now protected under the Natural Areas Protection Act (NAPA),” said Minister of Communities, Land and Environment Robert Mitchell. “The uniqueness of the Bonshaw landscape makes this area an ideal location for protection and by designating these parcels of land we ensure Islanders and visitors are able to enjoy these trails for many years to come.”

“Bonshaw Park is the first day-use provincial park we have developed in quite some time, so it will feature new types of signage and other improvements to enhance the visitor experience,” Economic Development and Tourism Minister Heath MacDonald said. “Thanks to the work of the Bonshaw Hills Public Lands Committee, one of the most beautiful areas of PEI can now be enjoyed and appreciated as one of the most beautiful parks on PEI.”

In 2015 through a partnership with Cycling PEI more than 12k of multi-use trail was constructed in the publicly owned land north of the Bonshaw Day Park.

Construction on a natural playground for the Bonshaw Day Park is expected to begin in June.

The public meeting is slated for May 25 at 7 p.m. at Bonshaw Community Centre. Members of the Bonshaw Hills Public Lands Committee will provide an update on trail development, property management, and plans for a natural playground which includes wheelchair-accessible paths in the Bonshaw area.
