Groups invited to apply for wellness grants before May 27

Community organizations are encouraged to apply for grants that promote wellness in Island communities, says Health and Wellness Minister Robert Henderson.

“There was an excellent response to the wellness grant fund which was offered last year to engage Islanders in the launch of the provincial wellness strategy,” said Minister Henderson. “We are pleased to keep the grants going this year with funding of $50,000 for projects that support physical activity, living tobacco-free, healthy eating, consuming alcohol responsibly and mental wellness.”

Applications are open to not-for-profit and non-government organizations, municipal communities, post-secondary institutions, home and school associations and community groups.

Grants are offered this year in two categories: new projects and scale-up projects.

New projects should encourage innovative ideas and practices, provide an opportunity to foster and strengthen community partnerships, and support community action to promote wellness. There are seven new project grants valued at up to $3,000 each.

Scale-up projects adapt or expand on effective interventions, build on successful partnerships and create lasting benefits for the population. There are three scale-up project grants available at up to $10,000 each.

“Engaged communities can create a culture of wellness in our province,” said Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Heather Morrison. “Last year we were pleased to provide grants to groups from across the province who represented all age groups and supported all five pillars of the wellness strategy. We look forward to building further on that success this year.”

Grant application forms are available at http://www.gov.pe.ca/health/wellness-grant-program

and will be accepted until May 27, 2016. Applications will be adjudicated by a committee of representatives from health, sport and recreation, mental health and addictions, and school health.
