May is Motorcycle Safety Month and Island drivers are asked to show extra caution and share the road with vehicles of all kinds, says Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paul Biggar.
“For many Islanders one of the joys of this season is the chance to once again bring their motorcycles out of storage and to enjoy biking the backroads and highways of Prince Edward Island,” said Minister Biggar. “There are still many safety challenges when motorcycles share the road with cars and trucks, and government is taking steps to protect the safety of all highway users.
Individuals that successfully complete an approved motorcycle safety program will receive a three point demerit credit on their driver`s license. Additionally, starting on June 6, new motorcycle riders that have passed their initial road test on a motorcycle below 550 cc will be restricted to only operate motorcycles below that engine size. To have the under 550 restriction removed, an additional road test on a motorcycle with 550 cc or greater will be required.
To further raise awareness of motorcycle safety, the Goldwing Rider’s Association has joined with the Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy to produce a series of safety pamphlets.
Sheila MacLean of Kinross was severely injured in a 2015 collision when a vehicle failed to see the motorcycle she was traveling on with her husband Robert. Robert was killed in the accident.
Sheila says she wants to make drivers aware of the high cost of failing to be alert for vehicles of all kinds.
“My message to vehicle drivers is simple – look once and then look again. Remember - you are not just looking for cars and trucks but there are motorcycles on our roads as well,” she said. “For motorcycle drivers, wear reflective vests after dark. Take a Motorcycle Training Program and anticipate the moves of drivers around you. Wear leathers and protective clothing at all times and wear approved helmets that protect your head, face and neck. “
