Expansion means efficiency, growth for Silliker Glass

Economic Development and Tourism
Longtime Island company Silliker Glass is improving its processes and becoming more efficient with help from Innovation PEI.

“Ever since they were called G.E. Silliker Construction, this family-owned business has been a steadfast contributor to Prince Edward Island’s economy for the past 50 years,” Economic Development and Tourism Minister Heath MacDonald said. “Now that Silliker Glass has added equipment to streamline their production processes with the help of Innovation PEI, they are well suited to grow and compete for at least another 50 years.”

When its sales increased by 50 per cent between 2014 and 2015, Silliker Glass realized they were having difficulty managing this sudden growth. To increase efficiency, the company installed a glass washer, flat edger, and a line of equipment to allow them to manufacture a new group of products.

Innovation PEI contributed $72,250 in Enriched Investment Tax Credits, which are focused on assisting manufacturing and processing companies.

Based in Borden Carleton, Silliker Glass started in 1965 and is now one of Atlantic Canada’s leading glass companies – manufacturing tempered glass, insulated glass units, commercial windows, entrances, and storefront systems. The company has 21 employees and will add six more as a result of the new equipment.

About 77 per cent of its Silliker Glass’ business comes from off-Island sales.

“We appreciate the assistance of Innovation PEI in helping our business to move ahead and expand in the Maritime provinces’ ever-changing business environment,” said Silliker Glass President Stacy Silliker. “It will help us get more competitive in the marketplace and keep jobs here on PEI for Islanders.”
