Parents, students and the public are encouraged to take some time to thank teachers and staff during National Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week, says Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Doug Currie.
"It takes a team of dedicated and hard working people, including teachers, bus drivers, custodians and other staff to provide a safe and supportive learning environment where students can excel," said Mr. Currie. "On behalf of the Government of Prince Edward Island, I want to express our sincere appreciation to those people who are making a real difference in the lives of our children and young people."
National Teacher/Staff Appreciation week is observed from February 14 to 20. It provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate on the work that teachers, administrators and staff do each day that serves the well-being of students.
The minister said that the restructuring of the educational system recognizes the key role played by teachers and school staff in building opportunities for success, achievement and excellence. He said that this week is an excellent time to highlight the outstanding contributions of teachers and other staff to the education system.
Just recently, Kevin Whitrow, principal of Colonel Gray High School, was one of 40 principals across the country to receive Canada’s Outstanding Principals Award.
This week, the Prince Edward Island Home and School Federation will be presenting its Extra Mile Award to those who have made extra efforts on behalf of students.
“These awards give the parents, guardians, teachers, administrators and staff of our Island schools an opportunity to come together to highlight excellence,” said Peter Rukavina, President of the PEI Home and School Federation.
"Teachers and school staff are vital members of the partnership we are creating to focus on the same goal, to achieve excellence for learners,’ said Mr. Currie."Working together, we are creating greater opportunities for students and young people."
