Parents reminded to register children for kindergarten

Education, Early Learning and Culture
Parents are reminded to register their children for next year’s kindergarten program prior to November 20, says Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Hal Perry.

“Public kindergarten benefits over 1400 five-year-old children and their families each year by providing educational supports in the classroom at an earlier age,” said Minister Perry. “Almost 6000 Island children have completed free full-day kindergarten before entering grade one. Starting school at an early age helps children be better prepared to fulfill their potential as they continue through public education and beyond.”

Children must be five years old by December 31, 2016 in order to be eligible for kindergarten.

How to register:

English Kindergarten

• Parents can register their child at their local elementary school. If parents are unsure of which school zone they live in, they can call 1-800-280-7965 for information on where to register for kindergarten.

French Immersion Kindergarten

• Parents can call 1-800-280-7965 for information on where to register their child.

French First Language Kindergarten

• Parents can register their child at their local French school. They can call 902-854-2975 to find out which school zone they belong to.

There is a registration form for parents to complete. Parents are asked to bring two pieces of information which verify proof of child’s age: a birth certificate and a Prince Edward Island health card. Verification of home address must also be provided, such as current utility bill.

“Welcome to Kindergarten sessions will be held in spring 2016 to provide families with an overview of what takes place in kindergarten, and to provide children with a chance to meet their teacher,” said Minister Perry. “Parents can get advice on the transition to kindergarten, along with literacy and numeracy strategies to help their children prepare for the school year.”
