Minister congratulates UPEI on recent university rankings

Workforce and Advanced Learning
Workforce and Advanced Learning Minister Richard Brown extended congratulations to the University of Prince Edward Island which once again ranked in the top ten in MacLean’s Magazine’s University Rankings, and ranked above average in various areas in the Globe and Mail’s 2016 Canadian University Report.

“Congratulations to the University—its students, faculty, and staff—who continue to make Prince Edward Island an attractive and viable option for postsecondary education in Canada,” said Minister Brown. “While rankings are not everything to postsecondary institutions, they can be useful tools in providing insight into areas of opportunity, growth, and improvement.”

UPEI moved up two spots to eighth position among the primarily undergraduate universities in Canada in MacLean’s 2016 University Rankings. The University of Prince Edward Island remains strong in categories like student awards, total research dollars, student/faculty ratio and operating budget.

UPEI ranked above average in the areas of bursaries and awards, positive change, and library resources in the Globe and Mail’s 2016 Canadian University Report.

The minister would like to especially recognize UPEI student Alexandra Heighington who was prominently featured in The Globe and Mail last week on her UPEI experience, as well as the students, faculty, and staff of the UPEI School of Sustainable Design Engineering that plan to tailor the programming to prioritize hands-on learning. With the launch of PEI’s Skilled Trades and Technology Week yesterday, this is especially fitting.
