Prince Edward Island Education, Early Learning and Culture Minister Hal Perry was honoured to be named chair of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC).
“CMEC allows provinces and territories to collaborate on how best to support student achievement and to share expertise on education issues affecting all Canadian students,” said Minister Perry. “I look forward to learning from my colleagues across the country, and bringing Prince Edward Island success stories to the national table.”
Founded in 1967, CMEC is the collective voice of Canada's ministers of education. It provides leadership in education at the pan-Canadian and international levels and contributes to the exercise of the exclusive jurisdiction of provinces and territories over education.
Workforce and Advanced Learning Minister Richard Brown will be representing Prince Edward Island post-secondary issues at the CMEC table. “I look forward to national discussions on current challenges facing post-secondary education in Canada, such as helping graduates link the skills and knowledge they’ve obtained in their post-secondary education to current labour market requirements in this country,” said Minister Brown.
Ministers of education work through CMEC on a wide variety of activities, projects, and initiatives. For example, CMEC
• assesses the skills and competencies of Canadian students through the Pan-Canadian Assessment Program (PCAP)
• develops and reports on education indicators;
• sponsors research in education-related statistics;
• administers Canada's national official-languages programs; and
• consults and acts on a variety of issues in elementary, secondary, and postsecondary education.
“I want to thank the out-going chair, Honourable David Eggen, Minister of Education for Alberta, for all his province’s work and valuable guidance on this important provincial and territorial partnership,” added Minister Perry. “I look forward to working with my provincial and territorial colleagues over the next two years.”
