September 9, 2015 Health and WellnessThe Chief Public Health Office is working to increase awareness of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause birth defects and brain damage in the developing baby. FASD refers to a wide range of physical, mental, and behavioural disabilities that can result. It is one of the leading preventable causes of development disability in Canada.“FASD is a lifelong condition that has a lasting effect on individuals, families and society,” said Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Heather Morrison. “Canada’s Low-Risk Drinking Guidelines warn that there is no safe amount, and no safe time, to drink alcohol during pregnancy.” People who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant can access information on FASD and how to support a healthy mom and baby through their health care provider or family resource centre staff.For more information visit www.fasdprevention.wordpress.comMedia Contact: Samantha MacKinnon
