The Advisory Council on the Status of Women released their 2015 Equality Report Card today showing provincial improvements, says Paula Biggar, Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure, and Energy and the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.
“The report card from the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women provides us with useful information to improve the lives of Island women,” said Minister Biggar. “This year we received a “C” grade. The Advisory Council noted that this means government has taken “small but important steps” toward women’s equality goals.”
The Advisory Council on the Status of Women notes that some of the steps are quite substantial such as: ongoing attention to family abuse protocols; significant investment in affordable housing; and, consistent follow-through on investments and initiatives that support early childhood care.
“Staff from across government worked hard to support this initiative and provide information for this process,” said Minister Biggar. “Government commits to using this information to support making decisions that are equitable for Island women,” said Minister Biggar.
Minister Biggar also recognizes the work that the staff and members of the Advisory Council on the Status of Women put in to the Equality Report Card, and looks forward to working with them as Minister Responsible for the Status of Women.
The 2015 Equality Report Card is the fourth report card release by the PEI Advisory Councils on the Status of Women. In 2007 the Council introduced this new process during the provincial election campaign to conduct an assessment of the province’s progress towards women’s equality goals.
