Samuel Holland PEI 250 Commemorative Lecture #5 June 11, 2015

Economic Development and Tourism
The fifth in a series of free lectures commemorating Samuel Holland’s survey of Prince Edward Island will be held Thursday, June 11 at 7 pm in the Bunbury and Southport Rooms at Stratford Town Hall.

This lecture is entitled The Military Career of Samuel Holland.

Presenting this lecture will be Earle Lockerby, historian and co-author of the upcoming book Samuel Holland: His Work and Legacy on Prince Edward Island.

During most of the eighteenth-century virtually all surveying was carried out by military engineers. One of the main applications of maps in that era was to provide a strategic advantage to commanders in the field while engaged in military campaigns. Lockerby’s lecture will show how surveying and the military were intertwined in Holland’s career and how his military experience was critical to his success as a surveyor and cartographer.

There is no admission fee for this lecture and everyone is welcome to attend. The lecture is presented by the Samuel Holland 250 Commemorations Committee.
