Islanders are encouraged to apply for new grants that improve wellness in their communities, says Health and Wellness Minister Doug Currie.
“We are pleased to support our new wellness strategy by launching a $100,000 wellness grant program,” said Minister Currie. “Islanders can now apply for grants of up to $5,000 that promote one or more of the five wellness strategy goals which include physical activity, living tobacco-free, healthy eating, consuming alcohol responsibly and mental wellness.”
The grants are open to not-for-profit and non-government organizations, municipal communities, post-secondary educational institutions, home and school associations and community groups. Projects should be aligned with one or more of the wellness strategy goals and strengthen community partnerships. Applications will be adjudicated by a committee of representatives from health, sport and recreation, mental health and addictions, and school health.
“Community-led initiatives can support wellness outcomes and the new grants are an incentive for Islanders to build on the strides they are making to create a wellness culture in our province,” said Dr. Heather Morrison of the Chief Public Health Office which has responsibility for the wellness strategy.
Application forms for grants of up to $5,000 are available online at www.gov.pe.ca/health/wellnessgrants and will be accepted from now until June 19, 2015.
Minister Currie said research shows that better health starts with small steps. “We know the fund will spark great ideas among Islanders who promote wellness in a variety of settings,” said the minister. “Our ‘Every little bit counts’ campaign has been very popular with Islanders. We are confident that the wellness grants will capitalize on this interest and engage more people in taking steps to better health.”
